Ekklesia part 2

I put two illustrations up in the Illustration section. One you've see on the opening page, and one that's new. More design pieces to come.

[My eyes hurt.]

Into the Woods

Guess what? I got a new computer! YES!

For those of you that don't know: I've been working on a G3 233 mhz, beige Mac that I got as a graduation gift back in 1998. It had a 6 gig hard drive and no cd burner. It seriously was my ideal of hell. Seriously. No, really.

So what'd I get? A Mac Mini. It's pretty hot. I'd marry it. No, really.

There's a new piece up in the Design section.

[When apathy makes you dry.]

Serenity

It's been 5 months since my last update. That shocks me. I'm in shock. There is shock all over my face. Weird. The intention was not to let such a vast amount of time pass, as I'm sure you know. So, what have I been doing during this time?

Well, for one, I've been working on artwork. I'm realizing, more and more, just how painfully slow I am. It's probably the most frustrating thing that I have to contend with. Well, that and boll weevils. Don't ask.

I counselled a week at Bair Lake Bible Camp in late July with my good friend, Jon Rounke. We taught mural painting of a sort. I'll post sketches of the murals later. Needless to say, (or maybe I do need to say) I had one of the most amazing experiences ever. The guys in my cabin were just so cool. It was awesome getting to know them for that short of a time. Wish I had longer. And, if anything, they taught me more than I ever taught them.

I turned 30 a week later. Yeah. A milestone. My family took me out for steak, and I had a nice time being embarrassed by balloons that read, "Happy 30th Birthday." The thing that really hit me that day (and this is probably being too confessional) was how very little I've actually accomplished in this life. That people younger than me have accomplished much more. Yet another frustrating thing.

Joss Whedon's Serenity came out on September 30th. If you're a friend of mine, then I've probably made you watch the Firefly DVDs that Serenity is based off of. And then I've probably dragged you to the theatre to see the movie. I just wanted to say: Thank you for your patience, and I hope you enjoyed that universe as much as I have. For those that haven't see the movie: Go see it! And if you enjoy it as much as I think you will, and if you want to watch Firefly to fill in the gaps you missed of these characters' histories, then I'd be more than happy to arrange a viewing.

And to solidify my nerd status I painted a couple Serenity-themed pieces. You can check them in the very small Design section.

DVDs: Lost season 1, Veronica Mars season 1.

CDs: Foo Fighters//In Your Honor, Starflyer 59//Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice, Headphones//Self-titled, Dane Cook//Retaliation, Citizen Cope//The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, David Newman//Serenity Motion Picture Soundtrack, Danger Doom//The Mouse and the Mask

More later.

[Can't stop the signal.]

Ekklesia

Finally, a new image on the opening page. Sorry it's been so long between updates. I've been mad-busy with putting together pieces for a portfolio book to send out to various places. A major dilemma--with regards to the portfolio--is whether or not it's going to be in color. There's pros and cons to both color and black-and-white. Chief among them is the cost of printing. So, I'm at a stand still.

The new Weezer is out now. It's very yummy! Also, I picked up the Miracles 1st. season box set. The pilot episode is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of film I've seen on television.

Early holds up his gun -- not pointed at Simon, just observing it.
EARLY:
I think this is very pretty. I like the weight of it.
SIMON:
I thought the intention was not to kill me.
EARLY:
You're missing the point. The design of the thing. It's functional. The plan is not to shoot you, the plan is to get the girl. If there's no girl, then the plan... well, it's like the room. You are gonna help me look for her.

Well, as you've no doubt noticed, some additions were made. Starting with the menu image, which is a little teaser of something I'm working on at the moment.

I added a Design section also. This was a huge debate in my brain. The main reason being that when I first created this site I wanted it to be strictly about illustration work. Which is a nice little sentiment, but it's naive. And it ultimately hurts my ability at getting freelance work. I shouldn't pigeonhole myself into just one category. I have some design skills, so I might as well showcase them.

I've been watching Seinfeld reruns lately. I forgot how funny that show was. If you get the chance pick up Greg the Bunny. It's another show that fell under the heel of the FOX reality-craze. Cheers!

Decaf

A new Recess strip is up in the Sequential section. I'll try to get more of these up on a regular basis.

I have a couple projects that have taken up most of my time. Artwork from these will be posted in the Illustration section very soon, so keep checking back.

Pick up Brandtson's Send Me A Signal. I've been jamming to this album for the past few months and haven't gotten sick of it yet. Also, pick up the Wonderfalls complete series dvd. It's fan-freakin-tastic. This is one of those FOX shows that got cancelled after a couple episodes, because the network doesn't know how to promote their stuff. I believe they opted for more of the Marry a Midget reality series instead. Anyways, it's just nice to see how the show ends. However, you are left with wanting more, i.e. two more seasons.

Self Made

Russell is up on the Illustration section.

I think the title of this update is a good theme for the new year. We have control of our lives, of who we are and who we become. To an extent. You can live as a byproduct of your environment if you want to, but that's not really "living", is it? We have a purpose in this world, and I think most of us humans spend a majority of our lives trying to figure out what that purpose is, and then actualizing said purpose. Keep in mind that your purpose is not a set of goals that you check off one by one. Nope. Your purpose is a living, breathing thing. It's what fuels you. What gets you up in the morning. Or in my case mid-afternoon.

So, what's your purpose in life? And, what's holding you back from becoming that purpose?

Sketch of the Day

Well, the first Sketch of the Day is up. I decided to go ahead and commit to doing this. Which scares me, because now I have to draw something everyday. I'm gonna need everyone's help to keep me honest though. If you notice the Sketch of the Day hasn't been updated in a day or two, then I expect emails, phone calls, smoke signals and/or carrier pigeons letting me know that I'm a slacker. OK? Just keep in mind that not all the sketches are gonna be breathtaking works of art.

[yikes!]

The Sketchbook section is up. This update is a big one, but I think well worth the wait. I threw out the Writing section, because I thought it was a bit pretentious. Or it would've been had it been finished. And who wants to read stuff when you can look at the pretty pictures. I'm thinking of adding a Sketch of the Day subsection to the Sketchbook. Also, you'll notice I changed the look of the site slightly.

If you're anywhere near a skateboard shop, check to see if they carry Grind Magazine #3. Yours truly has a piece in it. I'll also, have a piece in the next issue.

If you own a TV, you should be watching Lost on wednesday nights at 8. It kicks all other television shows in their respective hineys.

Trajedy comes in threes

Finally! An update! Geez! What took so long?!

Well, for one, I'm still living out of a duffle bag at my Uncle's and Aunt's house. It's getting old, but it's definitely taught me a lot about family and honor.

I'm still at Starbucks, which has been surprisingly fun and cool. It took awhile to get used to their crazy, logic-free system, but once you get over the hump of thinking like a girl, it all makes sense. Ha! Just kidding gals! Or am I? Which brings me to why I updated this site in the first place. I've finally got my first sequential piece up. I know! Who would've thought?! So check it out and let me know what you think.

Poetry in chaos

The GZA piece for Grind Magazine is in the Illustration section. Check it out when you get a chance.

I'll be back and forth between Tawas and Detroit, so I have no idea when I'll have new art up. I got a job working for Starbucks, which is good, cuz steady paychecks are always a good. But I'll basically be living out of my duffle bag for the next few weeks. It just sucks to be in this constant state of chaos. Not knowing where I'll be from one day to the next. All my stuff is scattered among three places. My dog, Gryphon will be up in Tawas while I'll be down in D-town. I have a little separation anxiety from being away from him, and anyone who owns a dog knows what I'm talkin' bout. Crap!

But I know it's all gonna work out. It always does. If there's anything that getting older has taught me, it's that. So, I hold the course and keep the faith.

KAYLEE: Sometimes a thing gets broke, can't be fixed.

Well, the "curve" threw me a curve. Figure that one out, cuz I can't. My head is still reeling from how fast everything happened, that's for sure. There were a lot of red flags on this one, but I just didn't pay attention to them. Or the people that were yelling for me to RUN AWAY. Didn't want to I guess. I wanted things to work for a change, but that's life. If a thing looks too good to be true, then chances are it is. I got a lot out of this one though, in terms of understanding myself better, and human behavior in general. Plus, I'll have a piece up shortly about the whole thing.

I'm also toying with the idea of a journal on the site. It will be hidden of course, but a link will be somewhere. Waiting. To pounce. Like a panther. Or a jack rabbit. Or something else with pounceable feet. You'll just have to search for it. Or if you're savvy with code, you'll be able to find it very easily. Anyways, I'll let you know if that's a go.

I'm listening to the Prayer Chain's Mercury. Man, that album never gets old. Well, I'm out. Got lots of drawing to be drawed.

MAL: Wheel never stops turning, Badger.

So very true. What goes around, comes around. I'm back in Michigan. Funny thing about going home again: things aren't ever the way you left them. At least I know this going in. I swear to you, in a million years I'd have never thought I'd be back here. But that's life. It always throws you a curve when you least expect it. This time around, the curve happens to be a woman. Well, enough with the metaphors. I put a new image in the Illustration section. I am currently working on an 8 page story entitled, Still Life which will be in a compilation circulating San Diego Con in a couple weeks. I'll also have an illustration in Grind Magazine. I'll let you know the street date on that. Cheers!

[BADGER: That only matters to the people on the rim.]

05.05.04
Preternatural

Got a new image on the opening page. Preternatural kept sticking in my head as the title for the piece. I just found out that had Angel gone on for another season, that Seth Green would've reprised his role as Oz. Frikkin' WB! Does it make sense to cancel a show on the season that it's had its best ratings? I don't get the strange monkey logic involved.

It's alive! Alive!

About dang time too. Now all I need to do is get a new splash image for the opening page up. Which is in the works as I speak. So check back in the next couple days.

I believe congratulations are in order
...

Although, it doesn't mean you're gonna get them. Just kidding. Three of my friends are getting married. Two of them to eachother. I was supposed to be going to the floor shows, but I have this whole moving-thing coming up. And the day of my leaving Savannah is somewhat up to the Powers-That-Be.

So, Tommy B, SME & Sandy... Congrats!

I believe 80% of all my friends are now married.

Easter and the joys of web design
...

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3...
Is this thing on?

So, I'm trying to figure out this whole web design-thing. It's pretty tough. Lots of things that need to be taken into consideration. You'd think three plus years at a web design company would've prepared me, but alas. The main thing is time-management. Of which I am horrible at. I think I have attention deficit disorder or something, cuz I flit back-and-forth between projects like a mongoose on other mongooses. Or is it mongeese? Hmmm...

I'm moving in a month, and this calls for many preparations. And my head is going to explode.
